What is the Basal Metabolic Rate? (BMR)
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy, in calories, expended while you are at complete rest, twelve hours of fasting.

What affects your BMR?
BMR decreases with age ( BMR drops about 2 per cent per decade after age of 20 )
BMR decreases with the loss of lean body mass
BMR increases with increase in body muscle mass (Men have a greater muscle mass, higher BMR)
BMR increases with regular cardiovascular exercises

The greater your Body Surface Area, the higher your BMR.
The heavier your weight, the higher your BMR.
The lower your body fat percentage, the higher your BMR.
Cold temperature causes an increase in the BMR
Thyrotoxicosis, too much thyroxin hormone, increases the BMR.
Hypothyroidism, too little thyroxin hormone, deacreases the BMR.
For every 0.5c increase in body tempreture, the BMR increases by about 7 percent.
Pregnancy increases the BMR, especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

How BMR is calculated?
Metric BMR Formula ( Harris-Benedict formula )
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )

Standard BMR Formula ( Harris-Benedict formula )
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Note: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs.

Example:
You are female
You are 40 yrs old
You are 5' 7 " tall (170 cm)
You weigh 154 lbs. (70 kilos)
Your BMR = 655 + 672 + 306 - 188 = 1445 calories/day

Using the Basal Metabolic Rate Calculator:
1- Select the Standard or Metric measurment
2- Select your gender
3- Enter your height, weight, and age
4- Click on the "compute BMR"
